At Quest Ceylon, we are deeply devoted to sustainability and are committed to uplifting the lives of the Sri Lankan tea-growing communities, from where our finest Camellia Sinensis (Tea leaves) is sourced. For this purpose, we joined forces with Tea Leaf Trust, a nonprofit organization that is determined to help Sri Lankan tea estate communities overcome extreme poverty.
According to Tea Leaf Trust, there are numerous tea estate communities that struggle with socio-economic issues that hinder their ways of living with 83% of tea estate women suffering from domestic violence, 85% of male tea estate workers being alcoholics, and youth suicide rates are disproportionately high. All of this is further aggravated as these families are deliberately kept as an uneducated and dependent workforce.
The current economic situation in Sri Lanka, in particular, the high inflation and increased cost of living, is making it extremely difficult for their children to regularly attend school. They are being forced to choose between going to school and having enough food for the family.
It is our ultimate goal to enable these communities to become self-reliant through education. Our donations will help Tea Leaf Trust to execute educational programmes for children and young adults in Sri Lankan tea plantations, allowing them and their families to escape poverty through job opportunities, higher education, and technical training.
So far, in 14 years, Tea Leaf Trust has helped over 39,182 youth through education with over 80% of young people progressing into employment, further education, and training. Along the way, these young people have, in turn, supported 349,397 members of their communities.
We are immensely proud to partner with Tea Leaf Trust in the mission to make a difference in Sri Lanka’s tea-growing communities.
